Frye Art Museum is proud to present the first US monographic exhibition dedicated to Franz von Stuck (1863–1928), the renowned Symbolist painter, architect, designer, and cofounder of the Munich Secession. His spectacular canvases, on loan from Europe’s leading museums, generated both praise and controversy among American critics of his day for their “cachet of strangeness, which comes from a modern treatment of legendary, biblical, mystic or symbolic subjects.” The exhibition is accompanied by a handsome, fully illustrated catalogue that examines Stuck’s embrace of the transformative ideas of his time as articulated by Wagner, Nietzsche, Darwin, and Freud.
